Painting

The Department of Painting engages the full field of contemporary image-making. Students develop practice across drawing, painting, photography, the moving image, and expanded modes of visual production, from the understanding that the history and possibilities of painting cannot be contained within any single medium or method. The department maintains rigorous critical and historical study alongside studio work, holding material intelligence and conceptual ambition as mutually necessary rather than competing values.

Independence of practice is developed in sustained engagement with the histories and debates that constitute the contemporary field. Students are expected to bring both formal confidence and critical awareness to their work, and to understand that the development of one without the other represents an incomplete formation.
